As a team, we have completed a couple of projects. This year is the second year of this organization on campus, yet there is huge room for improvement. As the second generation, we tried to be more productive and useful for the community. We did many things to improve our knowledge before working for the people. We engage with global issues by attending an Opioid Summit in Las Vegas. It was a huge event where many teenagers from the local schools came. Other than that, we also received training and information regarding alcohol, Narcan Overdose Prevention EducationTraining, peer-support training, and other necessary training for us. This training has given me a better understanding of the issues. In the process, I also recognize my privilege as a UWC student. Alcohol and Substance addiction usually occur in hard times. It started because of many reasons which generally caused by feeling unhappy about their current circumstances. This forced me to think of a broader world as if how I can make an impact with all my power and privilege to the world.
When I looked back on my community, the only thing I could do so far is to do my best to spread awareness about alcohol and substance. I do not have the right or power to control people, but I do have the ability to share information so that everyone will be informed about the consequences of their actions before using alcohol or substance. Aside from different ethics that people believe in, being informed is the first step to prevent a preventable death caused by extreme addiction or overdose. To do this, the ASAP team planned a workshop and presentation to first-year during orientation. During this many people ask about the related subjects and we were so happy to be able to answer them. We as a team has given them the best answer possible. While engaging with this global issue, we recognize the power of working as a team rather than just trying to influence someone as an individual.
For the next semester, we have prepared our new project. We wanted to recruit the next ASAP team faster than last year. So for next year, we will be focusing on giving the future ASAP member training so that when they were putting in charge next year, they will be ready. That is the goal for next semester and I will update you on my next post! Adios~
