I should have appreciated this place more to not regret it after like now. Yeah the school year was over because of Covid-19 and so does our activities at The SPOT. I wish there's a better word for heartbreaking because this exed really does mean a lot for me. The little routine that we have like riding the bus to go to OTMC, talk with Pat, eat pizza together, or fill a recycled bottle with M&Ms, seems precious to me. We have a couple of projects that we couldn't finish this semester. However, in this post, I will talk about the one that has been done. I think in general our exed has made a significant progress in terms of varies our activities to not just focus on Friday Night Fun. I, Ixchel, and Pat has succesfully improved our system of attendance, work ethics, and communication with our members. We also recruit many new members as the number goes up from 14 to 22 people. I think this result also the outcomes in me being resilient towards all the hardships I faced in the first year. I was struggling a lot to express my opinion or organize something due to the language barrier. But looking at where I am right now, I am super proud of myself to have come this far. My confidence level to speak and do something in the community has allowed me to be the leader and able to improve our system. Pat, my supervisor, really does have a significant part in building myself to be who I am right now.
This video above was a preview when our exed got the honor to talk with the guests from UWC ISAK Japan. This short sixty minutes was very educational and informative for both sides. Our members learned a lot about ISAK's cultures and they also learned a lot about our cultures. Especially we have our Japanese members who can resonate a lot with their culture as it resembles the Japanese cultures as well.
Two of these footages shows one of our meeting where we go to the old radio station in Las Vegas. This station was located at the top of the hill where we could see beautiful scenery including our Montezuma Castle from far. We've been here before and do the radio show together with Pat, but seeing the new member enjoy this tour gives me comfort and warmth. There are so many histories in this little space. One of them were about how when New Mexico just became part of the United States after belong to Mexico, the show was not allowed to be in Spanish (the language spoken in Mexico). It become quite roars and chaos but this station still stands strong till now. I think we have listeners from all around the world, even Russia!
This trip showed in the video was also one of the productive meetings that we had. We went to the City Council to see the Mayor and get to know more about how the City Council works. The Mayor himself gave us the tour of the office and introduce us to the officer. He was very sweet and kind as he allowed us to ask any questions we have. In the end, we meet in the conference room and discuss deeply the process of how the City Council get input from its citizen. Many new information was being told at us and many of our students were shock at how much effort was put to gather citizens' voices. It was also not easy to accommodate it, it has to go through different levels and phases. Surprisingly, it was even live-streamed on Youtube where people who can't come can just watch it from home. Fascinated by the system, our members including me involved intensely into the discussion or more like QnA. The Mayor was very patient in answering our questions. After the period ends, we walk and wait in the lobby to say goodbye to each other and exchange gratitude. In the lobby, we could see a picture of the old Las Vegas town which I attached to the gallery above in this post. That day was very memorable and eventful, I am grateful that we had the opportunity to do so.
This was our best and last Friday Night Fun of the year. I would say I feel much burden and anxiety for this FNF. It's because many of our new members have no idea what is FNF about. Added to that, the fact that there will be more people from UWC USA students and local people also scared me. These feelings put me into work mode which makes me want to do the best I could to provide them with a great night/event. I gather as much performance with as many varieties as possible. We also made a schedule for the night which was a new format that we use to improve from our last FNF. Every FNF leaves a significantly different aftertaste. filled with various unique performances and fun activities such as count inside the bottle has given new light in the event. I was very tired in the end and worn out but I'm happy with the results. We got to engage and interact with more people from the town. I saw many new faces that I've never seen before. I got much feedback throughout the event saying that this is one of the best FNF my team has ever come up with. I also received much individual feedback regarding how good I was at MCing the event and make it goes smoothly. I came back to the dorm that day with a smile on my face. I am proud to be the leader of The SPOT, and I mean it.
Thank you for the past years for all the beautiful memories I will never forget. It was a shame that we did not get a chance to finish up the rest of the year together, but those memories will remain close in my heart. Thank you, thank you and thank you for giving me the honor to lead this awesome exed.
Sincerely,
Your Leader
